Small businesses have been suffering in Cook County especially in areas with high African American populations. Bad legislation and the effects it has on the local economy and the lives of the people who live there is primarily to blame. Enacted laws like the soda tax which were disguised to be a means to cut obesity ended up hurting many local businesses and killing many jobs. This combined with other legislation and high tax rates does nothing to support our local communities or help foster business growth or create jobs. Walking through our streets we’ve become too familiar with the sight of abandoned storefronts, boarded up shops and “Closed” or “Going out of Business” signs littering the once bristling busy shopping centers.
Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy. And as your new Cook County Commissioner of the 5th District, I Pledge to Work Tirelessly to Create Tax Breaks for small businesses that will help foster growth in the 5th District as well as the whole of Cook County.
